New Issue of Industrial and Systems Engineering Review Showcases Research Across Emerging and Applied Engineering Challenges
West Point Press is pleased to announce the release of Volume 13, Issue 1 (2026) of Industrial and Systems Engineering Review (ISER), an open access journal published published in partnership with the Department of Systems Engineering at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
In his first foreword as editor in chief, Kameron Grubaugh highlights the value of bringing emerging scholars and experienced faculty together to advance research that is both technically rigorous and operationally relevant.
The five articles in Volume 13, Issue 1 explore how engineering methods can support decision-making across a range of complex systems.
In “A Comparative Analysis of Machine-Generated Knowledge Graphs Against Human Interpretation on Fictional Narratives,” Isaiah Goble, Kara Combs, and Grace Lemming examine how well automated methods capture the meaning and relationships found in fictional narratives.
Jason Law’s “Beyond the Front Line: Monte Carlo Analysis of Carrier UAV Operations in A2/AD Environments” uses simulation to examine the performance of carrier unmanned aerial vehicles operating in anti-access/area denial environments.
In “Towards Automated Contract Analysis: Contract Feature Extraction Using LLM and NLP,” Aaron Washington and Dr. Neil Ranly investigate how large language models (LLMs) and natural language processing (NLP) can support the evaluation of contract documents.
“Fixing the Ales of a Brewer: Crafting a Beery Complicated ILP,” by Diran Jimenez, Dr. Melissa Tilashalski, and Tayo Ilunga-Reed, applies integer linear programming to a practical production challenge. Working with Union Craft, a Baltimore brewery, the authors develop a tool to generate feasible brewing schedules while accounting for production timelines and constraints.
Finally, in “Optimal Condition-Based Maintenance Policies for Portfolios of Heterogeneous Assets,” Nikita Larichev and David Castañón develop an approach to maintenance planning that accounts for the differing conditions, degradation rates, and costs of a portfolio of physical assets..
Together, these articles illustrate how systems and industrial engineering methods can help researchers and practitioners address complex problems, from representing information and evaluating emerging technologies to allocating resources and improving operational processes.
The issue also reflects ISER’s commitment to showcasing research from students, faculty, and professionals working across disciplines and institutions. By connecting analytical rigor with practical applications, the journal supports continued inquiry into the systems that shape organizational performance and decision-making.
