West Point Press Announces Ukraine Symposium: International Law in the Crucible of Conflict – Volume 2
The West Point Press is excited to announce the availability of open access PDF and paperback versions of its latest release, Ukraine Symposium: International Law in the Crucible of Conflict – Volume 2! This volume continues the examination of the legal issues raised by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and expands the Ukraine Symposium collection with new perspectives on the application of international law in armed conflict.
The volume features articles addressing a range of legal and operational issues arising from the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Topics include the role of cyber technology in warfare and what the conflict can teach us about its implementation in combat; maritime conflict, including neutrality and exclusion zones; and the use of naval mines, torpedoes, and drones at sea. The volume also examines the conflict as it has been fought from the air and space, issues arising from Russian occupation in eastern Ukraine, the enforcement of local and international law, the effects of the conflict on children, and the erosion of human rights.
Volume 2 builds on the topics explored in Ukraine Symposium: International Law in the Crucible of Conflict – Volume 1. Together, the two volumes provide a broad examination of the international law issues arising from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, including the legal status and protections of combatants, prisoners of war, foreign fighters, and civilians; the use of particular weapons; the law governing the resort to force; cyber operations; maritime warfare; air and space operations; occupation; and the protection of human rights.
The Ukraine Symposium originated through the Lieber Institute for Law and Warfare’s Articles of War blog at West Point. Recognizing that the Russia-Ukraine conflict was proving to be a serious test of the role of law in armed conflict, editors Sean Watts, Ronald Alcala, and Mehmet Çoban brought together contributions examining emerging legal questions and challenges presented by the conflict.
The contributions to both volumes were originally published as part of the influential Articles of War blog hosted by the Lieber Institute for Law and Warfare at West Point. The volumes bring together diverse voices from around the world and from a wide range of perspectives, including government, the armed forces, academia, and humanitarian organizations. Edited and curated into cohesive volumes, the Ukraine Symposium collection provides an accessible educational resource for scholars, legal professionals, military practitioners, and others interested in international law and the law of armed conflict.
